The Cumbria Contrast Sock
My Cumbria Contrast sock is a warm, comfy, dress sock for everyday wear. They are ankle length socks with a plain knit body and ribbed cuff. I use the same design as our Alpaca Dress sock, but this has a real North of England pedigree. I collected the Blue Faced Leicester wool from farms around the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria – some from the farm next door!
I use British alpaca blended with wool because it is an excellent fibre for socks. The fibre’s ability to absorb moisture keeps feet warm and dry. Once I sort and blend this fibre, I send it off for scouring, carding, combing, dyeing and spinning in Yorkshire. You can buy this yarn for hand-knitting socks from Town End Yarns Cumbria Sock Yarn.
Then, I have the socks knitted by a traditional, family run sock manufacturer based in the Midlands. They include nylon as it provides enough stretch to give a good fit. I have not had the fibre Superwash treated, so wash gently by hand or in a Wool cycle in your machine.
My British alpaca is a blend of white and coloured fibres which provides an oatmeal coloured base for the dyed shades. Each colour combination has a contrast heel, toe and cuff.

Our natural fibre, unisex socks are kinder to your feet than synthetic alternatives, but this means they need a gentle wash. We recommend our alpaca and wool socks are gently hand washed and rinsed in tepid water, squeezing gently rather than wringing. A vigorous machine wash (whatever the temperature) with too much detergent or long spin, may result in shrinkage.
Leave to dry naturally and do not put in a tumble dryer.
